About the Congress

A year in the making, the 18th Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology Congress (APLAR 2016) has evolved to become even more wide-ranging in approach and broader in scope in order to bring to our practitioners as well as clinicians and scientists the up-to-the-minute scientific programme of high-level plenaries, interactive symposia, poster and platform opportunities, review courses and workshops you need to stay current.

The importance of APLAR 2016 is highlighted by impressive number of renowned speakers who will be flying into Shanghai from around the world to lead this comprehensive programme and share, discuss, debate and dissect all the significant developments and scientific advancements in the field of rheumatology in the past year. It is a multidisciplinary approach to the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders that will not only consolidate the endeavors made throughout Asia Pacific, but significantly advance the field as well.

For four days in September, APLAR 2016 will become the region’s rheumatology center, and it is fitting that the congress be held in Shanghai, China’s vibrant political and cultural hub. The full social programme will assure that all delegates have ample time to catch up with colleagues and meet the experts, as well as get the most out of your visit to our fabulous host city.

APLAR was established in 1963 at Sydney. Four nations: Australia, India, Japan and New Zealand together pronounced formation of SEAPAL (South East Asia and Pacific Area League Against Rheumatism). The first Congress was held in 1968 at the renowned TajMahal Hotel on the waterfront across the Gateway of India in Bombay (India). Since then, SEAPAL grew from strength to strength with many participating nations. It is now known as the Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology.

APLAR strives to propagate and consolidate Rheumatology endeavours in the Asia Pacific region. Towards this end the APLAR publishes a journal, the APLAR Journal of Rheumatology. The premier meeting organized by the APLAR every 2 years is the APLAR Congress which brings together rheumatologists, internists, orthopedic surgeons, clinical immunologists, physiatrists, physical and occupational therapists, pediatricians and researchers from allied disciplines on a common platform so as to provide the best forum in the region for deliberations on all aspects of musculoskeletal diseases. APLAR is affiliated to ILAR (International League of Associations for Rheumatology).

APLAR spearheads the fight against arthritis. APLAR’s mission and goals focus on providing state of the art care to patients with arthritis and other musculoskeletal diseases through continuing professional development of members, increasing the awareness and understanding about rheumatic diseases, patient advocacy and empowerment, and fostering research in the field of rheumatic diseases.
